Mitzi h as a vision of The Iron Man (a symbol o f the de clining power and posi tion of the Hap sburg dyn asty) and falls before the crucifix in fear; bu t her love remains st eadfast, and she prot ests her fai th though abus ed by her moth er and Schani. Infuriated b y her rejecti on, Schani threate ns to kill Nicki on his wedding da y unless Mitz i agrees to ma rry him.
