Their fi rst encount er significantl y takes place i n front of St. Stephen& amp;#39;s Cathedral on Corpus Christi day, with Nicki amon g the empero r&#39 ;s cavalry reg iment. Later , in the re fracted light of fa lling apple blossoms in the wine-ga rden--scene s of a dist illed, ether eal beau ty--Nick i gradually wins her faith and lov e. Meanwhil e, amidst t he sumptu ous and corrupt milieu of the f amily pala ce, Ni cki is dra wn into com plicity against his will, as his uns crupulou s mother informs him he must marry Cecelia, t he daugh ter of a wealt hy commone r, in ord er to r evive the fa mily fortun e. Mitzi has a vision of The Ir on Man (a sym bol of t he declining p ower and po sition o f the Hapsbur g dynas ty) and f alls before t he crucifix in fear; bu t her lov e remains ste adfast, and sh e protests her faith thou gh abused by her moth er and Schani . Infuriate d by her rejection, Sc hani threatens to kill Nicki on his we dding day unles s Mitzi agrees to marry him.
