The Ame rican ver sion is  only 1, 883  metres lon g - at 1 8 frames pe r second a diff erence of s ome 7 minut es to the A ustrian version with  2, 045 metres . Whereas we or iginally presum ed only a negligi ble dif ference, resul ting from t he varying l ength of the in tertitl es, a direct c ompariso n has neverth eless sho wn that t he Austr ian versio n diffe rs from the Ame rican ver sion both i n the monta ge and in the  duration of indivi dual scenes.  Yet how c ould it ha ppen that the  later regiona l distributi on of a  canonical US silent film w as longer t han the  "orig inal version&a mp;quot;? The prevalent  American v ersion of Blind H usbands  does not corre spond to the v ersion  shown at t he premiere of 1919. T his little-k nown fact w as alrea dy published by Richard  Koszarski in 1 983. The fi lm was re-rele ased by Universal P ictures in 1924 , in a v ersion that was 1, 365 feet (416 metres) shorter . At 18 frame s per secon d, this a mounts to a tim e differen ce of 20 mi nutes! & quot;Ti tles were  altered, sn ippets  of action re moved an d at least one  major sc ene taken out  entirely,  where von Steuben  and Margaret v isit a  small lo cal chapel ." (K oszarski) F rom the p resent  state of resea rch we can assu me that all the known Am erican copies of the film deri ve from this sh ortened re -release vers ion, a co py of w hich Universal  donated t o the Museum of Mode rn Art in 1 941. According to Koszarski  the original n egative of  the film was destroyed s ometime between 1956 an d 1961 and has theref ore been irr etrievably  lost. This in formation casts an  interestin g light on the  Austrian  version, wh ich can be dat ed to the peri od between t he summer of  1921 and t he wint er of 19 22. Furtherm ore, the co py is som e 200 met res long er than the U S version of  1924. If one follows  the details gi ven by R ichard Koszarsk i and A rthur Lennig , this m eans th at, as  far as b oth its d ate and its  length  are conce rned, the Au strian vers ion lies alm ost exactly in the mi ddle betwee n the ( lost) ver sion sh own at the prem iere and the re -released one.A l arge part of  the additi onal lengt h of the f ilm can be t raced to cu ts that wer e made to the 1 924 versi on in almost every shot. K oszarski descr ibes how the beginning and the end of sce nes were tr immed, in  order to &a mp;quot; speed up& amp;quot; the  film. Ho wever,  more excit ing was  the discovery t hat the Aus trian version contains shot s that are mi ssing in the Am erican o ne - shots /countershots , intertitles  - and furt hermore shows d ifferences i n its montage  (i.e. the plac ing of  the ind ividual sho ts within  a sequence).
