War and Peace director Sergei Bondarchuk plays the new stepfather of young Seryozha (Borya Barkhatov). So close do the stepfather and the boy become in the months following their meeting that, when time comes for the boy to move on in life, he refuses to leave his new dad's side. Their summer idyll takes place on a Soviet collective farm, managed by Bondarchuk and depicted by novice filmmakers Georgiy Daneliya and Igor Talankin in the most glowing and apolitical of terms. Though there isn't much to the plot, the film admirably succeeds as a sort of cinematic tone poem. Following his graduation in 1955, D aneliya worked only b riefly in that field wh en he de cided he& amp;#39;d rather be in  films, enro lling in Mos film Studios& amp;#39; Directors&amp ;#39; Cour ses in 1958. In 1960, Dan eliya co- directe d Seryozha/A Summer to Rem ember with Igo r Talan kin. Two  years later,  he made  his solo dire ctorial debut,  Put K P richalu/Th e Way to the Wharf (196 2). His  1969 comed y Ne Gory uy!/Don&a mp;#39;t W orry! success fully blended h umor an d melancholy , a de vice that woul d become Daneliya& amp;#39;s t rademar k. In ad dition to dir ecting, Danel iya co- authors the scr ipts fo r his films and occas ionally works on screenpl ays for othe r directors.  Daneliya has  won num erous national and int ernationa l awards for hi s work. I n 1964, his Ya Sh agayu po M oskve/I Walk A round Moscow  received  an honorabl e mention at the Can nes Film Fest ival, while i n 1975 Af onya received a special awa rd at the All Union Festival , a ma jor U.S.S.R. event. Daneli ya's bi ggest hit in t he U.S.S.R. , Mimino (1 977), earned the spec ial prize at the Mosc ow Inte rnationa l Film Festi val and the U.S.S.R . State Prize .
